ST. MARY STAR OF THE SEA, PARISH COUNCIL
Council Minutes for REGULAR meeting of June 8, 2002*
President Barbara Karsky called the meeting to order at 7:lO P.M. Present were Barbara
Karsky, Pres.; Rosemary Frombach, V.P.; Neil Lynch, Sec'y; Fr. John Golas; Deacons Michael
Sponzo and Tom Sutak; Susan Lewis, Pat Messina, MaryJane Oliveira, Ed O'Reilly, Laure
Welch; Trustees Elizabeth Creehan and Ed Cruess, Sr.; and Jane Derasadourian. Absent were
Tom Carrier, Carole Charette, Jon LeBlanc, Mary Yale and MaryLou Meigs. Karen Herbert was
also in attendance. New members present were Robert Bonato and Judy Welcome. New member
absent was James Doyle.
Barbara called on Fr. Golas who, following a moment of reflection, read Matthew's
gospel for the coming Sunday, followed by comments on the gospel. He then charged the
Council members to discuss among themselves the role of belonging(s) in their lives..
MINUTES: Moved (Ed C./Ed 0') to accept the Minutes of the April 28, 2003 meeting. Carried
unanimously .
Barbara welcomed new members Bob Bonato and Judy Welcome to the Council and thanked
departing members Susan Lewis and Laure Welch for their contributions. Council members in
turn thanked Barbara, whose term is also expiring, for her efforts.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Karen reported that CCD next year will combine 8th and 9th grades.
Confirmation candidates will be expected to do more with residents of Maple Village. Also, what
happens after youngsters are confirmed? The idea of a youth group of some sort is "on the table."
Jane followed Karen's report with a summation of this year's actual confirmation ceremony at
which Bishop Peter Rosazza presided.
LITURGY: A Search Committee has been formed to select a new organist. Some thought will be
given to defining the position, i.e., music director rather than simply organist.
WEBSITE: Ed 0' reported on more items, e.g., the Church bulletin, being included, along with a
schedule of coming events. He is also developing a procedure for updating data to keep them as
current as possible
OUTREACH: Pat reported that the Office of Urban Affairs is concerned with the problem of
urban sprawl and the inequities that have resulted from it. There might be something done in the
parish to deal with the issue.
NEW CHURCH UPDATE: Much of future work will be inside dependent upon completion of
the roof The cupola and skylight are under construction. Final paving remains to be done. An
alternate bid on the organ-see Minutes of April 28-which came in under budget has been
received. Fr. Golas said that the contingency fund is "holding" and that 62% of the pledges have
come in.
OLD BUSINESS: It was agreed that the Church picnic would be held in the Fall, most likely in
September. Ed 0' will act as liaison with the Knights of Columbus in planning this event.
NEW BUSINESS: Election of Council officers for the coming year were as follows:
President-Rosemary Frombach
Vice-President-Robert Bonato
Secretary-Cornelius Lynch
Fr. Golas suggested that a transition committee be formed to facilitate our move from one
house of worship to another. He anticipates a Spring dedication but the pending retirement of
Archbishop Cronin makes setting a definite date at the present time impossible.
Rosemary will inform the Council of meeting dates as soon as she is able to set them up. There
being no further business, the Council joined Fr. Golas in reciting the Hail Mary, after which
Barbara adjourned the meeting at 8:26 P.M.
