ST. MARY STAR OF THE SEA, PARISH COUNCIL
Council Minutes for REGULAR meeting of November 10, 2002
President Rosemary Frombach called the meeting of the Parish Council to order at 7:01 P.M..
Present were Rosemary Frombach, Pres.; Robert Bonato, V.P.; Neil Lynch, Sec'y; Fr. John
Golas; Deacon Michael Sponzo; elected members Tom Carrier, Carol Charette, Jim Doyle, Pat
Messina, MaryJane Oliveira, Ed O'Reilly, Judy Welcome, Mary Yale; Trustees Elizabeth Creehan,
Ed Cruess, Sr.; Guest Bob Murphy (Respect Life Committee). Absent were Deacon Tom Sutak,
Jane Derasadourian and MaryLou Meigs.
Rosemary called on Fr. Golas who, following a moment of reflection and an opening
prayer, read the gospel (apocalyptic in nature) of the following Sunday, along with comments on
the reading. He then charged the Council members to discuss among themselves the different
ways in which we measure time.
MINUTES: The September 22 Minutes regarding the church picnic should have read, "the picnic
had to be cancelled as a result of inclement weather." MOVED (Bob B, Ed C), that the Minutes
of September 22, 2003, as corrected, be accepted. Carried unanimously.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: In the absence of MaryLou and Jane, Rosemary read their
respective reports. The main project of grades 3-8 was the preparation of the shoebox gifts for
needy children all over the world. It was very successful and MaryLou hopes to repeat the
activity next year. Extra materials from the project have been stored in the Hart House. Those
preparing for Confirmation heard a pro-life presentation on October 26 by the Respect Life
Committee. A Rite of Acceptance for the candidates will take place at the II 0' clock Mass on
November 16.
SOCIAL JUSTICE: Pat gave an extensive report on a number of activities, including "JustFaith,"
a program aimed at making Catholic parishes tools of social transformation. It is sponsored by Catholic Charities USA. In connection with this, she described an upcoming conference at St.
Thomas Seminary titled "Journey of Hope, Call to Discipleship".
RESPECT LIFE: Bob referred to the October 26th presentation to the Confirmation candidates.
He also noted that Christmas cards will be on sale after Mass this coming Sunday, proceeds of which will assist the Pregnancy Center in Unionville.
WOMEN'S GUILD: Carol reminded the Council of the upcoming apple pie project. The Guild
raffle is going well. The bake sale, unaccountably, is down this year.
WEB SITE: Ed needs dates of coming events. He is wondering whether to place a suggestion
box. This is something to be taken up with the Liturgy Committee.
LITURGY: The Appreciation Dinner for the liturgical ministers (cantors, choir, lectors, ushers) is
set. A major concern of the Committee is the transition to the new church. A suggestion was
made that the Committee members act as liaisons with the various ministries Criteria for the
ministries are being discussed. The choir is increasing its numbers but is still welcoming anyone
interested.
NEW CHURCH: Fr. Golas expects the cupola to be installed on November 14, weather
permitting. It remains presently uncertain whether the new church will be ready for Christmas
celebration. A decision will be made soon.
OLD BUSINESS: Judy expressed her pleasure at the new organist and thanked the search
(Liturgy Committee) committee for its efforts in selecting Rick.
NEW BUSINESS: Judy made forms available for "Commitment Sunday."
The next meeting of the Council will be on Monday, January 26,2004 with an anticipated
starting time of 7 P.M., the location of the meeting to be announced. Fr. Golas led the Council in
a closing prayer. There being no further business, Rosemary adjourned the meeting at 8:04 P.M.
